The Company’s mission is to rate and rank the financial reporting
of the largest U.S. public companies – the S&P 500 and selected
other public companies – based on the key SEC reporting requirements,
such as 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, proxies, etc. It is the general practice of
RateFinancials to let the public reports speak for themselves. Our analyses
are based solely on publicly available information and rate several major
areas:
1) Financial reporting for its clarity,
transparency, quality, and completeness,
with a focus on three sub-areas:
accounting policies, footnotes and
management’s discussions/analysis of
operations;
2) Financial concerns, potential financial
exposure or quality of earnings concerns;
and
3) Corporate governance.
The ratings are based on a numerical system that assigns one to five stars
reflecting numerical ratings. The numerical ratings are based on pre-set
standards which are then reviewed internally. A company may receive up
to five points for each of the following criteria: accounting policies,
footnotes, management discussion/analysis, and governance. The remaining
rating criteria cover areas of financial concern or quality of earnings
and may total up to 20 points. The maximum number of points that can be
awarded to a company is 40 and a total of five stars. When the data set
is complete, companies will be ranked against the entire universe of companies
that we have rated, as well as against their industry peer groups.
